Industrial automation and robot arms
Cartesian / Gantry Robots
Cartesian robots move along linear axes arranged in perpendicular directions. A gantry can place the tool above a work area while supports carry the axes.
How these robots work
Linear guides and actuators position the tool along X, Y and Z travel. A separate rotation axis or tool may be needed for orientation.
How to compare the task
Choose travel and stiffness from the work envelope. A large rectangular workspace can be useful where an articulated arm's reach is insufficient.
Examples and applications
- Overhead material transfer
- Machine loading
- Rectangular work-area positioning
Limits of this category
- Linear travel alone does not provide arbitrary tool orientation.
- Long spans can impose structural and alignment demands.
What to check for the intended task
- Measure positioning across the full travel
- Check deflection with the fitted tool
- Record cable clearance at each axis limit
