Similarweb’s broader 2026 generative-AI report says more than 40% of US searches trigger an AI Overview. These numbers describe a measurement system, not the whole Google index.
A study can change its result by selecting desktop or mobile, logged-in or logged-out users, US or international traffic, trending queries or a fixed keyword panel. Query categories matter even more. A direct navigation search may never need a summary. A long factual question is much more likely to trigger one.
Academic researchers who tracked 55,393 trending queries across 19 categories for 40 days in March and April 2026 found a 13.7% overall activation rate and 64.7% for question-form queries. Another study using 11,500 representative queries reported AI Overviews in 51.5% of cases and found very low overlap among repeated outputs. The studies are not necessarily contradictory. They sampled different search universes.
Any publisher citing 43% should therefore write tracked searches, identify the reported source and avoid turning the percentage into a claim about every user in every country.
AI Overviews and AI Mode are different products
An AI Overview is a generated summary placed inside an ordinary Google results page. It can contain cited links, expandable sections and follow-up prompts. The rest of the search page still includes standard results, ads and other modules.
AI Mode is a conversational search experience built around a generated response. Users can ask follow-up questions and move through a longer session. Google has changed how links appear inside the product and says it is working to highlight original web content. The interface gives the generated answer more visual authority than a standard list of ten blue links.
Google reported more than one billion monthly active users for AI Mode in July 2026. That is a company metric whose exact definition, geography and level of engagement should be read alongside the earnings context. Monthly active users can include people who used the feature once. It does not directly measure publisher referrals.
Crawling, indexing, ranking and citation are four separate gates
Googlebot first discovers and crawls a URL. Google may then index the page, meaning it stores and understands enough of the document to consider it for search. Ranking decides where the page appears for a particular query. AI citation is another selection process: the generated system chooses sources or passages to support its response.

The click problem is already measurable
Pew Research Center studied Google usage in March 2025 and found people were less likely to click a traditional result when an AI summary appeared. Similarweb has reported high zero-click rates around AI Overview pages. Different methodologies produce different percentages, but the direction is consistent: when the search page answers more of the question, fewer users need to leave.
Informational publishers face the largest exposure. Definitions, comparisons and quick explanations can be compressed into a summary. Commercial queries behave differently because users may still need prices, inventory, reviews or a transaction. Semrush’s six-month study of more than 600,000 US desktop keywords found strong growth in AI Overviews for commercial-intent terms but a small decline for transactional terms. That distinction should shape editorial priorities.
A robotics publication cannot compete by rewriting a product announcement into five paragraphs. Google can summarize the same announcement. The defensible value is material the summary cannot easily reconstruct: original footage, direct verification, measurements, failure analysis, source reconciliation, component tables and precise statements about what a demonstration does not prove.
Citation accuracy is imperfect
The trending-query study decomposed AI Overview text into atomic claims and found about 11% were unsupported by the cited pages. Source mismatch can occur when a citation is topically related but does not establish the exact sentence. Generated summaries may also blend claims from several pages while placing one citation near the combined sentence.
Publishers should not interpret a citation as an endorsement of every detail on their page. They should make evidence boundaries visible. Put a source beside the number it supports. Separate company claims from independent measurements. Use dates for both the publication and the underlying event. Those practices help readers even when Google never cites the page.
Original reporting becomes the strongest defense
A generated summary can compress facts that already exist elsewhere. It cannot easily replace direct observations that only one publisher collected. GEO cannot force a citation. Google does not offer a markup field that guarantees inclusion. Adding FAQ schema does not compel an AI Overview to use the page. Repeating a keyword does not make the article authoritative. Artificially writing every paragraph as a self-contained answer can also make the page repetitive and unpleasant.
The objective should be source usefulness. A model needs a passage that answers a narrow question and a page with enough context to support trust. Readers need the full analysis after the summary.
