Internet Speed Test: Check and Fix a Slow Connection

A repeatable test method for measuring download, upload, latency, jitter and packet loss, followed by a clean troubleshooting sequence.

A reliable internet speed test measures more than the largest download number on screen. Record download, upload, unloaded latency, latency under load, jitter and packet loss. Then repeat the test over Ethernet and Wi-Fi so you can determine whether the bottleneck is the internet service, the router, the wireless link or one device.

Cloudflare notes that upload and download speeds alone do not provide a complete view of connection quality. Modern tests also examine latency and stability while the connection is busy.

Megabits per second and megabytes per second are different. Internet plans and tests usually use megabits. File sizes often use megabytes. Eight megabits equal one megabyte before protocol overhead.

Run a reliable speed test

Use the same method each time:

  1. Stop large downloads, backups and operating-system updates.
  2. Disconnect unnecessary VPNs unless you are specifically testing the VPN.
  3. Connect one computer directly to the router with Ethernet when possible.
  4. Close bandwidth-heavy applications.
  5. Run the test three times and record every metric.
  6. Repeat during a busy evening period and a quieter period.
  7. Repeat on Wi-Fi in the room where the problem occurs.

A test near the router and another in the problem room can expose wireless coverage issues. A wired test that is also slow points more strongly toward the modem, router, provider or external network.

Compare the result with the service you purchased

Find the plan’s advertised download and upload rates. The FCC National Broadband Map can show technologies and maximum advertised speeds reported at U.S. locations. Outside the United States, use the national regulator or provider contract.

Do not expect every test to equal the headline rate at every moment. Protocol overhead, shared networks, test design and congestion affect results. The useful question is whether performance is consistently far below the plan under controlled wired conditions.

Save screenshots with the date, time, device, connection type and server. A pattern is more useful to technical support than “the internet feels slow.”

Diagnose the bottleneck in the right order

1. One website or every service?

Open several unrelated services. If only one is slow, that service or route may be the problem. A local speed test can look excellent while a distant server is overloaded.

2. One device or every device?

Test another phone or computer on the same network. One slow device may have background synchronization, malware, outdated drivers, low storage, aggressive security software or a weak Wi-Fi radio.

3. Wi-Fi or wired internet?

Run an Ethernet test. If wired performance is normal and Wi-Fi is poor, focus on placement, frequency band, interference and mesh coverage.

4. Router or provider?

Restart the modem and router using the manufacturer’s instructions. Check cables, heat and status lights. If the wired result remains poor across devices, contact the provider with the saved measurements.

Fix common Wi-Fi problems

Place the router in an open, central and elevated position. Avoid hiding it behind a television, inside a cabinet or beside large metal objects. Walls, floors, mirrors, appliances and neighboring networks can weaken or compete with the signal.

Use a modern security mode and update router firmware. The FTC recommends changing default router credentials and checking the manufacturer’s site for updates. Do not disable security to gain speed.

The 5 GHz and 6 GHz bands can provide high throughput at shorter range. The 2.4 GHz band usually reaches farther but has less capacity and more interference. Automatic band steering is convenient, but manual testing can reveal whether a device is attaching to the wrong band.

A mesh system can improve coverage in larger homes, but each wireless hop may reduce available capacity. Wired backhaul is often more predictable.

Why speed collapses when someone uploads

Some connections develop high latency when the link is saturated. This is often called bufferbloat. A video call can become unusable while a cloud backup fills the upstream link, even though the idle ping is low.

Look at download and upload latency under load. Router quality-of-service or smart queue management can help when supported and configured correctly. Limiting one background upload may produce a larger improvement than buying a higher headline download speed.

VPN, mobile and satellite considerations

A VPN adds encryption and a route through a VPN server. Test with it on and off. A distant or overloaded VPN endpoint can reduce speed and increase latency.

Mobile performance changes with signal, spectrum, tower load, movement and indoor penetration. Run repeated tests in the same position. A result at a window may differ sharply from the center of a building.

Satellite links can provide useful coverage but have different latency and obstruction characteristics. Compare the result with the provider’s documented expectations for the service type.

When to contact the provider

Contact support when:

  • wired tests are repeatedly far below the purchased service
  • the connection drops across all devices
  • modem status indicates a line or signal problem
  • performance degrades at the same hours every day
  • replacement cables and a restart do not help

Provide test timestamps, wired results, account plan, router or modem model and a description of the pattern. Ask whether there is an outage, line-quality problem, provisioning error or equipment issue.

Five controlled measurements tell a clearer story than fifty random tests. Measure first, isolate one variable at a time and change equipment only after the evidence points to it.
