The argument begins with what people use money to obtain

Musk’s answer starts from a practical definition: people use money to claim goods and services such as food, housing and transport. If automated systems can produce those outputs in enormous quantities at very low marginal cost, the purchasing power represented by money could become less important for everyday needs.

This is a post-scarcity argument. It does not require banknotes to vanish. It requires production capacity to rise faster than demand across a wide enough range of essential goods.

AI can automate decisions while robots automate physical work

Software models can plan, design, schedule and optimize. Physical production still needs machines that move materials, assemble products, maintain equipment and operate in farms, warehouses, construction sites and homes. Humanoid robots are one proposed bridge between digital intelligence and environments built for human bodies.

The prediction assumes that these systems become reliable, inexpensive and energy efficient. Today’s demonstrations do not establish that robots can replace the full range of skilled and unstructured labor required to deliver housing, healthcare, food and transport.

A robot workforce could reduce labor scarcity while leaving other bottlenecks intact. Land in a desirable city remains limited. Power grids, data centers, copper, lithium, water, factories and transport corridors have physical capacity constraints. Building more supply takes time and requires permits, capital and coordination.

Prices could therefore fall sharply for some manufactured goods while rising for scarce locations, energy during peak demand or services controlled by limited infrastructure.

Ownership determines who receives the abundance

Even a highly productive automated economy needs rules for access. If a small group owns the robots, compute and energy systems, increased output does not automatically give every person an equal claim on it. Income, dividends, public provision or a new distribution mechanism would still determine consumption.

Moving from a capable robot prototype to dependable deployment across the economy requires manufacturing capacity, safety validation, maintenance networks, software updates and integration with buildings and equipment. Adoption also depends on regulation, insurance and customer trust.

Ten years can transform a technology sector, but it is a short period for replacing global infrastructure. The 2036 date should be read as Musk’s expectation rather than a consensus economic forecast.

Money could change function without becoming obsolete

Automation may reduce the price of standardized goods and shift economic value toward scarce resources, trusted human services, intellectual property, energy and access to desirable places. Currency could still coordinate those competing claims even if basic manufactured products become inexpensive.
